After our nice chill day at the beach in Torre de la Higuera, it rained most of the night and morning. This meant packing the tent up was a bit more difficult than intended, with us trying to fruitlessly dry and clean it from the sand and water. In the end we stuffed the tent and fly into a big garbage bag and shoved it in to boot to deal with later when we find a room to stay in for the night.

We made our way inland, to a town called Merida - a town that has many Roma ruin sites dotted all over it. We found a caravan park with bungalows and got one of those for the night. We draped our tent from the coat hooks in hopes it would dry by the morning.

After a day of doing touristy sight-seeing and stuff in Merida, we headed further north-east during the evening, and as we were passing by a town called Áliva, I noticed it had a large stone wall surrounding it. So we diverted off the freeway and made our way toward the flood-lit wall. We found an entrance in the wall and drove into the town.

We entered tight cobble-stoned lanes leading to many plazas and luckily found a park to get out of the car for a frosty walk around. It had a medieval charm to it and I even found a quaint cake shop in one of these fore mentioned plazas and bought tiny cakes! A great accidental find, yet again.

After our brief encounter with Ávila, we headed towards Segovia - a name Jack and I both agree sounds like an eastern European town. We decided to turn off the freeway again and see what Segovia had to offer. Well, when we entered the city and headed toward the centre of town, we were greeted by a great tiered wall of arches. A very tall wall of arches. We were a bit awestruck; we drove around near the wall, turned around at the round-about and went to find a park for yet another foot tour of the plaza beyond the arches.

Returning from our walk, we stopped in a small restaurant, had a quick bite and were on the road to find somewhere to park and car-camp for the night again - seeing as it was too late to find a campground by then. We found a good little spot off road to park, but the hills offered a bitterly cold night, even in the car. Glad we weren't in a tent after all.
